It's more than Just a Technology Upgrade, it's an Organizational Change

Smart Grid implementations are pushing utilities to undergo radical transformations of both their technological and operational processes. The telecommunications and Information Technology (IT) workgroups within the utilities are often at the forefront. One of the technologies forcing the changes is Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS).


This type of network implementation enables the telecommunications or IT workgroup to behave more like a traditional service provider and enables everything from very low bandwidth telemetry circuits to very high bandwidth data pipes; blending the legacy technologies with more up-to-date technologies. The utility will not realize the potential benefits without a comprehensive review and redesign of their operational business processes accompanied with a robust change management program. These two initiatives help reorient the business functions and end users, as well as the telecommunications and IT workgroup, aligning the utility’s methods and procedures with the upgraded technology.
