David South Joins West Monroe's Sustainability Practice

West Monroe Partners, a full-service North American business and technology consultancy, today announced that David South has joined the firm to lead its Sustainability practice, based in Chicago. He has more than 30 years of energy and environmental experience related to technology, markets, policies, and regulations in the utility, industrial and transportation sectors.

During his career South conducted studies, created strategies and devised innovative solutions for companies in the power generation, industrial, financial, technology, and manufacturing sectors, as well as public-sector organizations such as trade associations, research institutions, and state and federal agencies. His resource, technology and delivery infrastructure experience includes coal, natural gas, nuclear power, distributed/on-site, cogeneration, renewable/clean energy and clean fuels. He devised strategies for compliance with clean air and greenhouse gas emissions—including contributions to trading mechanisms for SO2, NOx, CO2, and RECs—and water and waste residuals. South also helped clients optimize their performance or minimize their risk through use of life cycle, benchmarking, supply chain and foot printing techniques.

“David South’s experience is invaluable to organizations confronting the combined challenges of new technology, commodity and financial markets, and regulatory requirements related to energy and emissions,” said Dean Fischer, West Monroe’s CEO. “He is a highly respected leader in this field, and widely recognized for his contributions to research and development, strategy, risk mitigation, and financial impact. We are thrilled to have him on board and helping us advance our capabilities in this area, which is drawing significant interest across our client base.”

South joined West Monroe from Technology & Market Solutions, LLC. He was founder and president of this consultancy, which provided analytic, strategic, economic, and regulatory advisory services on technology, market, and business issues to entities with energy, environmental or natural resource concerns. His previous roles included manager of business development for Amerex; vice president of Energy Resources International, Inc.; senior program manager for technology and environmental policy for Argonne National Laboratory; and economist for Mittlehauser Corporation.

“West Monroe has developed distinctive capabilities and a sound reputation in the energy and sustainability space,” said South. “I am very impressed not only with the capabilities in place today, but with the firm’s deep personal commitment to sustainability and its perspectives on integrating sustainability with business strategy.”

South earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from John Carroll University with a concentration in Energy and Environmental Studies. He also completed graduate course work at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has authored numerous journal articles and book contributions, published more than 200 conference papers and technical reports, and delivered briefings, conference presentations, and expert testimony.

West Monroe introduced its sustainability practice in 2012 to help clients create business value by understanding the economic impact of sustainability strategies and investments, selecting the right environmental management systems, developing innovative energy and pollution management programs, and reducing carbon footprint throughout the supply chain.
