The Basic of Prop 65

The goal of California’s Proposition 65 – the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act – is to protect drinking water supplies and reduce or eliminate people’s exposure to toxic substances. Prop 65 requires CalEPA to maintain a list of substances that are either known or possible carcinogens and/or chemicals that could cause birth defects. Companies that manufacture or sell products that contain these substances must inform consumers of that fact through warning labels, signs in retail stores or similar mechanisms if use of the products could result in exposures exceeding the “safe harbor” levels.
