Modernizing operations to excel in a digital world

The Challenge
The end of the road for analog

The Utility faced a dilemma: It operated nearly 1,000 analog circuits for SCADA backhaul and protective relaying. Carrier support for these circuits was waning, so the utility needed to investigate alternative communication solutions.

The Utility understood that in a digital age defined by new products, new services, and new ways of doing business, this was an opportunity to push beyond legacy systems running on analog technologies and build operating infrastructure of the future.

The Solution
Making the case for change; guiding the implementation

West Monroe used its industry experience and role as a trusted advisor to raise awareness around issues the client faced, then gained the buy-in needed to act. The team approached the challenge in three stages: Assess the current state, build the business case and solution roadmap, and secure approval on implementation funding.

First, the team mapped the existing inventory of analog circuits in Google Earth, captured recurring charge data for each circuit, and identified functional overlaps across the circuits. Informed by this dimensional data, the team modeled a solution for each analog circuit.
