What is RSS?

RSS stands for 'really simple syndication' - a type of application that Web users employ to aggregate and review news and website content of interest. RSS is a relatively new, but fast-growing trend in online marketing. Some six million people have installed RSS readers to receive news and website content on a regular basis.

In a nutshell, a user installs an RSS reader, a new type of Internet crawler also known as a news aggregator or newsreader. Then, when visiting a website that utilizes RSS functionality, the user 'opts in' to receive new information when it is published on key pages of that site - typically articles and press releases. The user's RSS aggregator then visits the site, looks for new information, and retrieves the data for users to review at their convenience.
